Floor Tile DIY Installation Guide

9 Steps to a Great Garage Floor

Welcome to OMG's guide on installing modular interlocking garage floor tiles in Australia! This DIY tile installation guide is a great tool to enhance your garage's look and functionality. Follow these 9 steps for a smooth and successful installation.

Before you begin, ensure you have everything needed, including:

1. Modular Interlocking Garage Floor Tiles: Purchase enough tiles to cover your desired garage floor area. Remember to factor in any cuts needed around the perimeter.
2. Tile Saw: For cutting tiles to fit around edges.
3. Tape Measure: For measuring your garage floor and cutting tiles.
4. Rubber Mallet (Optional): For assisting with firmly interlocking the tiles.
5. Broom or Vacuum Cleaner: For cleaning the garage floor before installation

STEP 1

SWEEP AWAY THE DEBRIS: ENSURING A CLEAN SURFACE:

Prepare Your Workspace! Remove all vehicles, furniture, and belongings from the garage floor. Sweep or vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove any dirt, debris, or loose particles. A clean surface ensures optimal adhesion between the tiles and the floor.

STEP 2

PLAN YOUR TILE LAYOUT FOR A FLAWLESS FINISH:

Measure your garage precisely. Sketch a layout plan to visualise tile placement, especially near walls and corners. This plan helps determine the starting tile "side" (pegged or looped) based on your garage door. If using male ramp edges, the looped side can face any direction. However, with a side door, plan the layout so the remaining pegged side faces this door for a finished look.

STEP 3

BUILDING YOUR TILE ROWS:

To create a continuous interlocking pattern, ensure each tile maintains the same orientation. Overlap the "male" pegged side of your second tile with the "female" looped edge of the first. For a secure connection, gently tap the overlapped area with a rubber mallet or apply firm, downward pressure with your hand using your body weight. Repeat this process, connecting tiles in a row, until you've established 2 or 3 full rows spanning the width of your garage floor.

STEP 4

POSITIONING THE FIRST ROW FOR CLEARANCE:

Begin by connecting any ramp sections you have to the front row of floor tiles closest to your garage door. With the door closed, gently push the entire row of tiles inwards, creating a gap of 5-10mm for clearance between the tiles and the door. Once the first row is positioned, use the width of your garage as a reference to centre the entire tile layout on the floor. This will ensure a balanced and even installation for the subsequent rows.

STEP 5

ACHIEVING A FLAWLESS FINISH:

After laying most tiles, check the gaps between edges and walls. Carefully slide the entire floor layout slightly left or right to achieve equal gaps on both sides. Ensure your garage door clears the floor freely. If not, adjust the tiles inwards slightly, maintaining even gaps for a visually pleasing look.

STEP 6

OPTIMISING GARAGE FLOOR TILE INTERLOCKING:

For a seamless installation, keep track of your tile orientation. Imagine starting with "male" pegs (bumps) facing top right. Maintain this throughout, ensuring all pegs on each tile consistently face that corner. This consistent placement guarantees smooth interlocking edges as you fill your garage floor.

STEP 7

FINISHING TOUCHES: ADDRESSING THE EDGES

Once all full tiles are laid, address the edges. These tiles are easily cut with a saw, but remember! Leave a 5mm expansion gap around each cut for movement. Carefully measure and mark gaps before cutting. Secure the cut tiles by gently tapping them in, ensuring a seamless fit with surrounding full tiles.

STEP 8

CLEANING AND ENJOYING YOUR GARAGE FLOOR:

With all the tiles securely in place, your new modular interlocking garage floor is complete! Take a moment to thoroughly clean the surface, removing any dust or debris left behind from the installation process.

STEP 9

EFFORTLESS MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR NEW GARAGE FLOOR:

Now, sit back and admire your handiwork! You've transformed your garage floor into a durable, stylish, and easy-to-maintain space.
